Amenorrhea Types, Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

The term "amenorrhea" is derived from two Greek words ‘a’ meaning without and “menorrhea” meaning menstruation. Amenorrhea refers to the absence of menstruation or menstrual bleeding in women of reproductive age.

Symptoms of Amenorrhea:

  • Headaches

  • Vision changes

  • Milky discharge from the breasts

  • Changes in breast size or tenderness

  • Hair loss or excessive hair growth

  • Acne

  • Voice changes

  • Decreased libido

  • Vaginal dryness

  • Hot flashes

Types of Amenorrhea:

  1. Primary Amenorrhea, which refers to the failure to start menstruating by the age of 16, as this may indicate a genetic or developmental issue with the reproductive system.

  2. Secondary Amenorrhea, the absence of menstruation for more than three months in women who have previously had regular menstrual cycles and it may be a sign of pregnancy, thyroid problems, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), premature ovarian failure, or other hormonal imbalances.

Causes Of Amenorrhea:

  • Pregnancy

  • Breastfeeding

  • Menopause

  • Hormonal imbalances (such as thyroid dysfunction or polycystic ovary syndrome)

  • Excessive exercise

  • Weight loss

  • Delayed puberty

  • Stress

Diagnosis of Amenorrhea:

  1. Medical history: Healthcare providers will ask questions about your menstrual cycle, including the age at which you started menstruating, the regularity and length of your menstrual cycles, and any changes you have noticed in your menstrual cycle.

  2. Physical examination: This can be performed to assess for any abnormalities or signs of underlying medical conditions.

  3. Hormone tests: Blood tests may be performed to measure levels of hormones such as oestrogen, progesterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and luteinizing hormone (LH).

  4. Imaging studies: Ultrasound or MRI may be ordered to assess for any structural abnormalities in the reproductive system.

  5. Endometrial biopsy: In cases of prolonged or severe amenorrhea, an endometrial biopsy may be performed to evaluate for abnormalities in the uterine lining.

  6. Pregnancy test: This test can be done to rule out pregnancy as a cause of the absence of periods.

Treatment of Amenorrhea:

It focuses on treating the root cause, promoting hormonal imbalance, and restoring periods through the followings such as,

  • Lifestyle adjustments

  • Herbal supplements

  • Medications

  • Psychotherapy

  • Surgery

It is important for women experiencing amenorrhea to seek medical attention and undergo a thorough evaluation to determine the underlying cause. Delayed diagnosis and treatment may lead to long-term complications, such as infertility and osteoporosis.
