NSCLC Types and Stages to Better Fight Lung Cancer

 Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)


The lungs are two cone-shaped breathing organs located in the chest. As you breathe in, the lungs deliver oxygen into your body. As you exhale, they emit carbon dioxide, a waste product of the body's cells. Each lung is divided into portions known as lobes. The left lung is separated into two lobes. The right lung is slightly larger than the left and has three lobes.


Cancer is a disorder in which the body's cells divide abnormally. Lung cancer occurs when cancer begins in the lungs. Lung cancer starts in the lungs and can spread to lymph nodes or other organs. Lung cancer is classified into two types: non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC). Non-small cell lung cancer is a disorder in which cancer cells develop in lung tissues and it has many sub types. Smoking is one of the leading causes of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).


Types Of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)


Each type of non-small cell lung cancer has different types of cancer cells. Each type of cancer cell grows and spreads uniquely. Non-small cell lung cancer types are named from the types of cells detected in the tumor and based on how the cells appear under a microscope.


  • Squamous cell carcinoma: Cancer of the thin, flat cells that line the lungs' interior. This is sometimes referred to as epidermoid cancer.

  • Large cell carcinoma: cancer that develops in various types of large cells.

  • Adenocarcinoma: cancer that develops in the cells that line the alveoli and make substances such as mucus.


Stages Of Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer


Occult (Hidden) Stage


The primary malignant tumor cannot be identified at the hidden stage. Cancer cells may be detected in sputum or other lung fluid but not in another testing such as imaging or bronchoscopy. Cancer has the potential to migrate to other parts of the body.


Stage 0


In stage 0, abnormal cells are identified in the airway lining. These abnormal cells have the potential to develop into cancer and spread to surrounding normal tissue. Adenocarcinoma in situ (AIS) or squamous cell carcinoma in situ (SCIS) may be present at stage 0.


Stage 1


Cancer has formed in stage I. Stage I can be classified into two sections: IA and IB. Here, the tumor is only in the lung and is 3 or 4 centimeters or less in size. No lymph nodes have been affected by the malignancy.


Stage II


Stage II is classified into stages IIA and IIB. In stage IIA, the cancer is larger than four centimeters but not larger than 5 centimeters. The cancer has not spread to any of the lymph nodes. Cancer has progressed to lymph nodes on the same side of the chest as the initial tumor and is 5 centimeters or smaller in stage IIB. Cancerous lymph nodes are found in the lung or the bronchus.


Stage III


Stage III is classified into stages IIIA, IIIB, and IIIC. Cancer has migrated to lymph nodes above the collarbone on the identical side of the chest as the primary tumor, as well as lymph nodes on the opposite side. 


Stage IV 


The tumor could be of any size, and the malignancy could have spread to the lymph nodes. Cancer has spread to a single organ other than the lung, such as the brain, liver, adrenal gland, kidney, bone, or lymph node other than the lung.
